How long does a solar hot water system last?
The lifespan of a solar hot water system can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the components, the installation process, and the level of maintenance it receives. However, a well-maintained system can last up to 20 years or more.
How often should I have my solar hot water system serviced?
It is recommended to have your solar hot water system serviced at least once a year to ensure that it is functioning properly and efficiently. Regular maintenance can help to prevent costly repairs and extend the life of your system.
Can a solar hot water system be installed in any location?
While solar hot water systems are typically installed on rooftops to maximise sun exposure, they can also be installed in other locations such as on the ground or on a wall, as long as there is adequate space and access to sunlight.
Is it possible to use a solar hot water system in conjunction with a conventional hot water system?
Yes, it is possible to use a solar hot water system in combination with a conventional hot water system. This is known as a dual system, and it can provide hot water during times when the solar system may not be able to generate enough heat, such as on cloudy days or during periods of high demand. You can talk to our professional technicians to help you determine the best system configuration for your needs.
Why is my solar hot water system dumping hot water out of the relief pipe and what should I do?
This generally happens in summer when the water in the storage tank is too hot, and the pressure-temperature relief valve activates to release the super-heated water from the tank.
If you notice hot water ‘dumping’ from the system in summer, turn off the solar HWS stop-tap that feeds water to the solar hot water storage tank, but only if it is safe to do so (if there is no hot water pooling under the stop-tap).
After 40 minutes, hot water in the storage tank should have had time to ‘blend’ with cold water that had previously been topping up the storage tank as hot water was ‘dumping’, and it should then be okay to turn the stop-tap back-on.
If the pressure relief valve continues to dump hot water for more than 60 seconds, turn off the solar HWS stop-tap again, and call Kalamunda Plumbing on 9291 6000.
If you aren’t sure which is the solar HWS stop-tap, or how to turn it off, turn off the main stop-tap at the water meter and call Kalamunda Plumbing.
In any event, feel free to call Kalamunda Plumbing.
